Moving the kids: telling them, moving day, the new neighborhood

The move is the part parents dread and the part kids remember. Done in the right order, with the two homes ready to describe, it is a weekend, not a wound. Here is the order, the Colorado rules that touch it, and the small things that matter to kids.

Order

Decide, then tell, then move

Tell them once the plan for both homes exists. Kids handle a decision better than a maybe.

Colorado

The parenting class

Most Colorado judicial districts require a parenting-after-divorce class for both parents. Do it early; it covers this.

Relocation

Ask before you sign a lease

A move that changes the parenting plan needs consent or a court order (C.R.S. 14-10-129). Across town is usually fine; across the state is not.

Kids

Their stuff, both homes

A bed, a toothbrush, clothes and a charger at each. No suitcase childhood.

The short answer

Tell them together, once, with both homes ready to describe. Keep the routine (school, activities, friends, the other parent) unchanged as far as the plan allows. Set up their room at the new home first, before the boxes. Ask before any move that changes the parenting plan.

Telling them

  • Together if you can, once the decision is made. "We are selling the house. You will have a room at Mom’s and a room at Dad’s, both near school, and the schedule is the same."
  • Answer the questions they actually ask: where the dog lives, whether they change schools, whether their friend can still come over, where their stuff goes.
  • Do not ask them to choose. Which house, which parent, which room. Adults decide; kids are told, kindly.
  • Show them, do not describe. Drive past the new home. Let them pick paint or a bedspread. Ownership of the small things.

The Colorado rules that touch a move

Parenting classMost judicial districts require both parents to complete a parenting-after-divorce class before the decree. It covers transitions, exchanges and telling the kids.
During the caseThe automatic injunction bars removing the children from the state without consent or an order. Moving across town is not restricted, but tell the other parent in writing.
After the decreeA relocation that substantially changes the parenting time goes through the court under C.R.S. 14-10-129, with notice to the other parent. Consult your attorney before any lease or contract outside the plan.
SchoolsA move across an attendance boundary can require a school change or an open-enrollment request. Check the district map for the exact address first.

Moving day, without a scene

  1. Their room first. Bed made, favorite things out, before the kitchen is unpacked.
  2. Move on the other parent’s day if you can. Kids arrive to a home, not a job site.
  3. Two of the small things. Chargers, toothbrushes, a set of clothes, the medications, at both homes from day one.
  4. Same rules, both homes. Bedtime, screens, homework. Agree the three that matter and let the rest go.
  5. The exchange routine. Same day, same time, same place, from the first week.

The new neighborhood

  • Walk to the park, the school route and the nearest friend’s house in the first week.
  • Keep the activities: same team, same lesson, even if the drive is longer for a season.
  • Invite the friend over early. A house becomes home when someone else has been in it.
  • Give it a school term before judging it. Everyone hates a move for six weeks.

Selling the old house with kids in it

Showings in a half-occupied home with children: a fixed showing window, nothing about the divorce in the marketing, the other parent’s things boxed and out of the photos, and a plan for where the kids are during open houses. How a divorce sale runs. Separate signings if you need them; the proceeds are held at title and split as ordered.

The kids first, then the numbers

The house is not the same thing as the kids' stability. Two homes they can count on usually is.

Every parent we talk to starts with the same fear: that selling the house means losing what the kids have. Sometimes keeping it is right. More often the thing the kids need (both parents close, a bedroom at each home, the same friends and activities) is possible in two smaller homes, and the house is what pays for them.

We give both parents the same written number at the same time, tell you what one income carries, and help you find the second home inside the parenting plan. Nothing here is logged to an account, and we contact you only if you say yes.
