Protection ordersAny Colorado county court can issue a civil protection order. The self-help center can help with the forms; Colorado Legal Services prioritizes survivors.
The law on your sideA court cannot order you into mediation with a spouse you say has abused you (C.R.S. 13-22-311), and since August 2025 abuse and coercive control are factors in maintenance (SB25-116).

Free help with forms and process

Colorado Judicial Self-Help CentersEvery district has one (“Sherlocks”). They help people without a lawyer complete forms and understand the process; they cannot give legal advice. Directory at coloradojudicial.gov. Denver: 1437 Bannock St., Room 281, 303-606-2442, Monday to Friday 8 to 4.
The court’s divorce guidelawhelp.colorado.gov/divorce walks through the forms in order. The forms themselves are free at coloradojudicial.gov.
Fee waiversJDF 205 if your income is below 125 percent of the poverty guideline or you receive SNAP, TANF, SSI or similar. Details.

Legal aid and finding a lawyer

Colorado Legal Services303-837-1313 or apply online. Free civil legal aid for income-eligible Coloradans; family-law work focuses on protection orders, divorce, custody and guardianship for survivors of abuse. People 60 and older may qualify regardless of income for some services.
Metro Volunteer LawyersThe Denver Bar Association’s pro bono program for Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Elbert, Gilpin and Jefferson counties. Apply through Colorado Legal Services at 303-837-1313.
Colorado Bar Association Find-A-Lawyercobar.org/Licensed-Lawyer. Check any attorney’s license and discipline history at coloradolegalregulation.com.
Limited-scope representationColorado lets you hire a lawyer for one piece of the case, such as reviewing the agreement. Ask for it by name.

Mediation

Office of Dispute Resolution (the court’s mediators)720-625-5940. $75 per party per hour for domestic relations cases; $15 per party per hour with a finding of indigency; the director can waive fees.
Private mediatorsThe Colorado Bar, the ODR roster and collaborative-practice groups list family mediators. Colorado does not license or certify mediators; an ODR roster member has met ODR’s own qualifications. Mediation, collaborative or court.

CHFAColorado’s housing finance authority: down-payment help and first-time-buyer loans (no ownership in three years qualifies). Buying again on one income.
metroDPADown-payment assistance for Denver and about 40 metro cities, no first-time requirement.

Social Security Administrationssa.gov for divorced-spouse and survivor benefits after a 10-year marriage. The rules.

Counseling and support

The workshop’s counselor is a licensed marriage and family therapist. To find one, the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) license lookup verifies any therapist’s license, and most health plans have a behavioral-health directory. 2-1-1 Colorado can connect you to low-cost counseling. If you are in crisis, call or text 988.
