Getting through it

Divorced men are several times more likely than married men to die by suicide, and the first year is the worst of it. Nobody puts that on a real estate site, so we will. Here is what the numbers say, who to call in Colorado, and the routine that gets men through the year.

Built for men

Man Therapy

mantherapy.org, a Colorado-born program with a 20-minute head check and a therapist finder that does not feel like therapy.

A counselor

Covered more than you think

Most plans cover therapy; Colorado Crisis Services and 2-1-1 can find low-cost options. Divorce coaches are a thing too.

The routine

Sleep, movement, people, purpose

Not advice. A schedule. The men who come out the other side built one on purpose.

The short answer

Treat the first year like a job with four tasks: sleep on a schedule, move every day, see people you are not related to every week, and have one thing you are building. Get a counselor in month one, not month nine. Drink less than you want to. And if it gets dark, 988 answers day or night; so does the Kenna team if the thing keeping you up is the house.

What the research says

Studies consistently find that divorced and separated men have suicide rates several times higher than married men, that the risk peaks in the months around the separation, and that men are less likely than women to have a support network that survives the marriage. Men also drink more after divorce, sleep worse, and delay medical care. None of that is destiny; all of it is why a plan matters more than willpower.

Who to call in Colorado

Colorado Crisis ServicesCall or text 988; chat at coloradocrisisservices.org; walk-in crisis centers across the state. Free, 24/7, confidential.
Man Therapymantherapy.org. Colorado’s own program for men who would never say the word therapy: a head check, plain talk, and a way to find help.
A therapist or divorce coachPsychology Today’s directory filters by insurance and specialty; Colorado Crisis Services and 2-1-1 list sliding-scale options; many employers have an EAP with free sessions.
VeteransVeterans Crisis Line: dial 988 then press 1, or text 838255.
Fathers’ groupsDivorce-recovery groups run at churches and community centers across the metro; the workshop’s counselor seat is the place to ask which ones are real.

The plan, week by week

  • Week one: a doctor’s appointment, a counselor’s first session booked, one friend told the truth.
  • Weeks two to four: a bedtime, a walk or a gym slot every day, alcohol counted, the kids’ schedule on the wall.
  • Months two to six: three standing things a week with other people; one project (a certification, a house, a trip with the kids); the money decisions made on paper, not at 2 AM.
  • Months six to twelve: the new place set up like a home, not a holding cell; a routine you would keep even if nothing else changed.

The house and the head

Half the men we talk to are losing sleep over the house, not the marriage: the payment, the deadline, the fear of a foreclosure or of losing the kids’ bedrooms. That part has a number, and the number is usually better than the fear. Get it in writing, then get some sleep. Keep the house, sell the house, foreclosure and divorce.

We are real estate agents. This page is a signpost, not treatment. If you are in danger, call or text 988 now.

Straight answers, no lecture

Most men who call us want two things: the number, and a plan.

We are a real estate team, not your attorney and not your ex’s. On the house we give both spouses the same written number at the same time, tell you whether you can carry it alone, and run the sale or the buyout without drama. The rest of the questions on these pages are answered plainly and pointed to the right professional.

Nothing here is logged to an account. If you send a form, we text once to set up a time, and we never contact you without permission.

Plain-language education, not advice. Divorce Decisions is published by The Kenna Real Estate Group at Keller Williams DTC, a real estate team. Nothing here is legal, tax, lending or financial advice, and reading it does not create any professional relationship. Colorado law and lender rules change; confirm anything that matters to your case with a licensed Colorado attorney, a tax professional, and your lender. See our full disclaimer.
